Homework
Learning does not just happen at school.
You are all learners, always learning! Homework helps you practise what you’ve learned and build your confidence. It encourages you to take responsibility, develop independence and take pride in your work, helping you succeed both in school and beyond.
Expectation:
- Minimum of x3 home reads per week recorded in reading record (5 is best!)
- Practise your spellings each week at home – you will be tested weekly in school
- Practise your number bonds / times tables each week
- Weekly consolidation homework (Year 5 & 6)
- Occasional projects
Reading
- Reading for 10-15 minutes each day at home helps you become a stronger, more confident reader.
- The difference between a child who reads 5 times per week at home and a child who reads 1 time per week at home is up to 12 months additional progress across their time in primary school!
- Please have your parents sign your reading record every time you read outside of school.
- Children with 3+ reads per week will receive an in-school reward.
Spelling
- Practising your spellings at home helps you remember words more easily and use them correctly in your writing.
- It builds your confidence, improves your accuracy and helps you become a stronger, more successful writer in all subjects.
Times Tables / Number bonds
- Practising times tables is absolutely essential.
- Fluent times tables recall is tested at the end of Year 4 in the MTC (Multiplication Tables Check)
- Quick, accurate recall makes solving problems easier, supports your learning in lessons and helps you to succeed across all areas of maths.
Homework Books
- In UKS2 (Year 5/6) you will be given weekly homework which consolidates learning in core subjects (English and Maths). This is set from a homework book.
- Homework is marked in school.
- This prepares you for the homework demands of secondary school while benefiting your learning here at Chandlers.
Project Tasks
- Occasionally, your class teacher may set a project task. We encourage children to work independently or with family members on these tasks. These are excellent opportunities for children to really engage with their learnt content at a deeper level, conducting research and modelling something they can be proud of!
Competitions
- Sometimes, we may set competitions whereby children can complete their entries at home. This might include design competitions, short stories, poetry, art, speeches etc. These are great fun and you could win a prize!
